About UGC NET

UGC NET – University Grants Commission - National Eligibility Test is an entrance conducted by the National Testing Agency entrusted by University Grants Commission in order to select the candidates for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professors in Indian Colleges and Universities.

UGC NET is conducted twice a year. Until June 2018, CBSE administered the NET in 84 subjects in 91 countries. The UGC-NET is administered by the National Testing Agency beginning in December 2018. (NTA). 

NTA conducts the UGC NET for Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor in Computer Based Test online mode. A test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of multiple choice questions and objective types. There will be no break duration between papers.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals who have secured a minimum of 55% marks in a Master's degree or equivalent examination from universities recognised by UGC in Humanities and Social Science, Electronic Science, Computer Science & Applications, etc., are eligible for the test. The other backward classes belonging to the non-creamy layer/ SC/ ST/ OBC/ PWD category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks in their Master's degree.
  • Individuals who have appeared or will be appearing at the qualifying Master's degree examination and whose results are still awaited or individuals whose final year examinations are delayed may also apply for this test. Moreover, such applicants will be admitted provisionally. They shall be considered eligible for the award of Assistant Professor/ JRF eligibility only after they have completed their Master's degree examination a minimum of 55% (50% in case of OBC/ SC/ ST/ PWD). If they don't finish their P.G. degree exams with the required percentage of marks within two years of discovering their NET results, they will be disqualified. 
  • The PhD degree holders who have completed their Master's level examination shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in total marks for appearing in NET.
  • Candidates are suggested or advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation only. The candidates whose post-graduation subject is not covered in item No. 9 may appear in the related issue.
  • Candidates holding a postgraduate diploma/certificate from an Indian university or a foreign degree or diploma or certificate from a foreign university or institute should check with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, to see if their degree is equivalent to a Master's degree from a recognised Indian university.

UGC NET Reservation

The Government of India's Reservation Policy applies to UGC-NET. Accordingly, the reserve of seats at Central Universities and institutions believed to be universities shall be as follows: 

  1. 15% of the seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
  2. 7.5% of seats Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
  3. 27% of the seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) candidates as per the Central List*
  4. 10% of the seats for General-Economically Weaker Sections (General- EWS) candidates.
  5. 05% of seats in the categories mentioned above for Persons with Disabilities\s(PwD) with 40% or more disability (increased from 4% to 5 % vide decision from the commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in the court of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwD), dated 05.04.2022 as per\section 32 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016).
